Aluminium gates versus wooden gates

Posted by admin 09/07/2021 20 Comment(s) Aluminium Gates,

It is easy to understand why wooden gates remain popular.

Most of all, they have strong aesthetic appeal because of their natural good looks.

Historically, wood has also been a cheaper option than alternatives for wrought iron or steel.

However, its status as the number one choice for homeowners is no longer assured with aluminium proving a worthy competitor.

Why is that the case?

This piece presents the advantages of aluminium, when compared to wood, as a material from which to manufacture automated gates for the driveway at your property.

Maintenance requirements

Wooden gates look good after they have been installed, but without sustained maintenance they can soon begin to deteriorate.

For example, wooden gates will need to have old flaking finishes removed, and new varnishes, paint, or other preservatives applied.

Wooden Gate

This needs to be thorough to prevent any areas of rot or decay having a chance to develop. With the passage of time, wood will also split, rot and warp.

Other components you’ll need to pay attention to on wooden gates are the iron and steel fixings.

These have to be oiled or greased to ensure that they move freely.

Any rust that develops should be treated immediately with an appropriate inhibitor to prevent it spreading further.

If left untreated, it can impact on the strength of the hinges, locks, and gate braces.

Aluminium gates, on the other hand, will only require an occasional wipe down with water and a mild detergent to keep them looking their best.

They will usually be treated with a weatherproof finish to help them last longer; our Qualicoat surface coating is guaranteed for 10 years.

However, it is true that automation systems installed on both wood and aluminium gates need regular mechanical maintenance checks to ensure they continue working well.

Motor requirements

Wooden gates need to be strong enough to be able to cope with being automated.

Strengthening gates increases their weight.

So, the motor required to operate each one will need to be more powerful.

Wooden gates will swell and gain weight in the rain, and then contract as they dry out. This puts a strain on the motor and the other fittings.

Aluminium, on the other hand, is both incredibly strong as well as lightweight. This means it requires a less powerful motor and is less demanding on both the motor and the other moving parts.

Overall, in terms of lifespan, maintenance and appearance, aluminium gates have key advantages over wood.

Wooden gates have a nice appearance once they are constructed, but without consistent upkeep, they can quickly start to decay.

Aluminium is naturally a very durable material that stands up well to corrosion and rust, and unlike wooden gates will not absorb moisture.

Just imagine being that guy that had all his money in aluminum and be alive that day the price dropped.

Wooden gates will expand and weigh more when it rains, then shrink when it dries. The motor and other fittings are strained as a result.

Aluminium is an ideal material for automated gates. It may not be as strong as steel, but its corrosion-resistant qualities mean that it will retain its strength for much longer. It gives you strength and durability, but the lightness of the material means that the gates are much easier to operate.

To be honest I actually prefer aluminium gates over wooden gates, not only because they need less maintenance but also because they look way more futuristic than the wooden gates. Sure, the wooden gates may have a certain vintage aesthetic but to me they don't beat the modern aesthetic of the aluminium gates.
