If you are considering whether to have automatic gates installed at your property then there are lots of questions to answer before work can start.
Among them is: ‘How do you install a gate on a sloping path?’
The objective of this piece is to identify some of the different options to choose from if your house has a sloping driveway.
If your driveway slopes downwards towards your property, then your choice is far less likely to be restricted.
Swing gates, if that is what you opt for, will be able to open inwards towards your home providing the space they move into isn’t usually occupied by parked vehicles and there are no other obstacles such as walls or plants.
If your driveway slopes upwards as you enter the property, swing gates risk grounding as they open inwards.
One option is for them to open outwards, but there must be enough room on your property for them to do so without obstructing public footpaths or a road – a hazard that must be avoided for safety reasons.
You could have a sliding gate as an alternative, but not if your driveway slopes across its entrance.
In that instance, the load on the gate motors changes as the gate slides downhill or uphill.
They require additional force to push uphill, and a higher braking force to prevent them from accelerating when moving downhill.
Yes, there are alternatives.
One is to hang the gates on hinges that tilt the automatic gates upwards as they open.
Another is to mount the gates higher on their posts to prevent them from striking the ground as they open.
However, the latter leaves a sizeable gap below the gates which makes it look as though they have been badly fitted.
There are security risks too in that they wouldn’t prevent an intruder from crawling underneath and sliding any stolen goods out of your property the same way.
Similarly, small children playing outside might be tempted to try and retrieve a ball that ends up on the pavement or road outside.
A pet can use the same method of escape too.
Before you make a choice about automatic gates, it’s important to carry out a proper site survey. This reduces the risk of any issues arising at the installation stage.

My brother-in-law plans to install an automatic gate in his newly constructed home. But there’s one thing that bothers him – whether or not it is possible to install that in a sloping driveway. His driveway slopes downwards while entering the property. After browsing the internet for a few minutes, I clicked on your blog. Your writing is amazing! I found some interesting solutions. But I wonder if a swing gate is still applicable even if the slope is up to 20%.
